Why Start Tutoring?
Amazing Hourly Rates
The current UK minimum wage for a university student (age dependent) is £8-11 per hour.Â
For private tutors, this would be the absolute lowest rate you would expect earn in the very early days aftet starting out, and the number will only go up as you gain experience.
Most university student tutors on this site will charge in the £15-£30/hour rate.
Flexible Schedule
One of the best things about tutoring is the complete flexibility it gives you.
University classes often change on a week-by-week basis, therefore an ideal student job is one that can seamlessly fit around this schedule. Whilst it is best practice to give students a regular slot, most of the time they don’t mind a one-off change as long as some notice is given. This really does make tutoring the most flexible job out there; at the end of the day, you are your own boss.

Work from the comfort of your own home
Although we wouldn’t reccomend you work from your bed itself, teaching from your own home has some serious advantages.
A 5 minite break between lessons is plenty of time to use the bathroom, grab some snacks and make a hot drink.
Cut Out The Travel Time
Another perk of working from home: zero travel time.
Think about it; let’s say you (optimistically) live a 10-minute journey from your place of work and do 3 shifts each week for 40 weeks per year.
That is 40 hours spent travelling to work annually. Doesn’t seem so little now!
Moreover, unless you’re commuting on bike or foot, the journey will cost you in terms of fuel or public transport fees.
Do Something Worthwile
Perhaps the most rewarding part of tutoring is seeing how you can make a real difference in someone elses life.
Maybe you give some last-minute lessons to someone a few weeks before exams, or help them improve their abilities over the course of years. Regardless of the context, tutoring allows you to help a person improve their ability in a subject and more importantly their confidence in general; it is a great journey to be a part of.
What if I don't have experience?
You don’t need any prior experience to become a tutor, nor do you need to be a master of your chosen subject(s). Tutoring is something you can learn as you go, and for those just getting started you can adjust your prices to reflect your inexperience and increase them as you gain confidence and practice.
We understand this can be a big leap of faith, that’s why we’re here to help and support you through the journey. If you have any concerns, feel free to get in touch with us here where we can arrange for one of our experienced tutor advisors to offer some free advice and coaching to get you set-up.
